Why We Work
Active Role in a Professional Association
I Am Alert To…
I am Sanjay, 48, working as a senior professional in the power sector. Weekday evenings are usually for rest, but somehow twice a month I land up at meetings of a professional association where I am just “a member”, nothing more on paper.
I Am Impacted By…
Nobody asked me to do this. My company doesn’t even count this as work. I could easily skip today and nobody would notice.
I Am Rooting For…
But while sitting there, discussing standards, listening to younger members argue passionately, I feel oddly alert. This feels like work, but without pressure. I am not representing anyone, yet I feel responsible. I realize I am not here for influence or recognition. I am here because this profession has given me a lot, and somewhere this feels like paying attention back.
One Minute!
The meeting ends late. I reach home tired but satisfied. I don’t explain this to anyone. I just feel like I used my evening well. |
