Lesson Two; How Artificial Intelligence Tries to Understand What You Really Mean
The mentor smiles.
"Now that AI has received your question...
what do you think it does next?"
Most people immediately answer,
"It searches for the answer."
The mentor shakes his head.
"Not yet."
"Before AI looks for an answer...
it first tries to understand the question."
Think about your own life.
Suppose your manager says,
"Prepare a report."
Will you immediately start writing?
Probably not.
You will first ask yourself several questions.
Which report?
For whom?
How detailed?
By when?
Should it contain numbers?
Charts?
Recommendations?
Exactly the same thing happens inside AI.
When you type,
"Write a report."
AI quietly asks itself,
"What kind of report?"
"What is the user really trying to achieve?"
"What does the word 'report' mean in this situation?"
Now compare that with another prompt.
"Write a two-page report for a food processing company explaining why farmers should adopt drip irrigation. Use simple English suitable for first-generation entrepreneurs."
Notice what has happened.
The second question has quietly removed many uncertainties.
The audience is known.
The subject is known.
The length is known.
The writing style is known.
The objective is known.
AI now has a much clearer direction.
The quality of the response usually improves dramatically.
This is why experienced AI users spend more time thinking about the question than the answer.
They know that good prompts do not merely ask.
They guide.

Probably not.
Now imagine saying,
"Prepare a proposal for a company that wants to develop 5,000 acres of agricultural land across India. The audience is the Board of Directors. Keep the language professional but easy to understand."
Immediately the answer changes.
Why?
Because AI has received context.
Context tells AI about the world surrounding your question.
Who is asking?
Who will read it?
Why is it being written?
What has already happened?
What should happen next?
Think of context as the background of a photograph.
The same person standing in a hospital, a farm, a classroom and an airport creates four completely different meanings.
Nothing about the person changed.
Only the context changed.
AI works in a remarkably similar way.
It does not interpret sentences in isolation.
It continuously tries to understand the surrounding situation.
The richer the context...
the richer the response.

"The Internet?" someone replies.

"Sometimes.
But not always."
Many people imagine AI opening thousands of websites every time a question is asked.
That picture is not entirely correct.
Most modern AI systems have already learnt from enormous amounts of information during their training.
When you ask a question, AI does not usually begin by opening books or browsing websites one after another.
Instead, it first tries to recognise patterns from what it has already learnt.
It is a little like meeting an experienced teacher.
If you ask,
"What is photosynthesis?"
The teacher does not immediately run to the library.
She answers from understanding.
Only if you ask about yesterday's government notification might she need to check the latest information.
AI behaves in a similar manner.
Sometimes it answers from its learned knowledge.
Sometimes it retrieves fresh information.
Sometimes it combines both.
The important lesson for you is this.
AI is not merely searching.

Human memory is selective.
Artificial Intelligence is also different from the popular imagination.
Many people think AI permanently remembers every conversation.
That is not always true.
Some information belongs only to the current conversation.
Some information may be remembered for future conversations if you choose to save it.
Sometimes AI may need to retrieve information again.
Sometimes it works only with the context already available.
Understanding this helps you become a much better AI user.
Never assume AI automatically remembers everything you discussed last week.
If something is important...
tell it again.
Provide context again.
Professionals do exactly the same thing.
Before an important meeting, they do not depend entirely on memory.
They review previous notes.
Refresh important facts.
Reconnect the context.
AI also performs much better when the context is refreshed.

Most of the time, it performs remarkably well.
Sometimes, however, it produces information that is inaccurate.
Incomplete.

But the idea is actually quite simple.
Sometimes AI confidently produces an answer that appears convincing...
even though part of it may be wrong.
Does this mean AI is useless?
Not at all.
Think about people.

New scientific discoveries replace old knowledge.
No source of knowledge is perfect.
The important lesson is not to expect perfection.
