It surfaced strongly after 2017, especially in fast-growing companies trying to retain talent without increasing budgets. Today it’s widely recognized — from tech offices to teaching institutions — as the moment when celebration feels strangely empty. People smile for the photo, but the calculator in their mind stays silent.
